Chapter Six

On pages 69 and 70, as Urchin watches and listens to the conversation between Husk and the king, he hears Husk talking about how hard all the animals must work in preparation for winter, and asks for more animals and an earlier start for the work, while the king sighs, "I don't know where all this work comes from, Husk."

Husk also tells the king that they need more weapons to defend themselves, and asks the king to give permission to trade garnets for swords, and the king mumbles, "Jewels for swords."

What can you infer about the relationship Husk is developing with the king?  What do you think Urchin's observations -- while he was listening and watching Husk and the king -- mean or suggest?  What's going on here?

  1. I think Urchin observed that Captain Husk is kind of in charge and is telling the king kind of what to do

  2. I think Husk is questioning the kings authority I don't think that he thinks that the king can do what he needs to do.

  3. I think Husk is trying to be in charge and making the king make bad choices so Husk can be king. I think Husk is taking advantage of the king while he is a wreak so that he doesn't really know whats going on.

  4. Great point, Jacoby. The king is weakened, and probably not thinking clearly since his son died (plus, he's drinking a *lot* of wine), so maybe Husk really is trying to take advantage of him by pretending to help him in order to further his own motives.

  5. I think Husk is telling the King what to do because hes trying to be the King because hes going to be King.

  6. Husk is trying to become more powerful than the King because he wants to be. Its kind of like a Master-Apprentice thing. The Apprentice wants to be as powerful or more powerful than the Master and is tired of being bossed around by the Master. Then the Apprentice does something to give him a big advantage over the Master, making the Apprentice a Master himself. The only thing that would change the cycle is that the Master is killed or taken over. If the Apprentice fails, the Master just finds a new one.
